AFRIEL is an official youth partner of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka under its #YouthVoteSL Campaign and awarded for the Most Effective Campaign by the Commission.
VIEW (Volunteer Initiative for Election Watch), is a special wing of AFRIEL that works on connecting the trained grassroots volunteers with national-level election monitoring organizations.
AFRIEL has supported Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV), People’s Actions for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), and Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) on election violation and public property misuse complaints reporting, voter education, and providing human resources for these national election observation organizations in their coordination work in the Northern Province in Presidential Election and Parliamentary Election in 2015.
We work on voter education as well. We believe that only a free and fair election is far away from a mature democracy. We need to put more emphasis on the people’s power on oversight of all organs of state, including those at provincial and local government level during the pre-election period. We also assist national-level election monitoring bodies in conducting mobile services. In 2014, AFRIEL supported CMEV to conduct NIC mobile services in coordination with the Elections Department and the Department of Registration of Persons which benefited nearly 4,500 people in the Northern Province.
